THE CRITIC

Set in 1930’s London. When the most feared and vicious theatre critic in town Jimmy Erskine (Ian Mckellen), finds himself suddenly in the cross hairs of the Daily Chronicle’s new owner David Brooke (Mark Strong), he strikes a Faustian pact with struggling actress Nina Land (Gemma Arterton) who is desperate to win his favour. WICKED LITTLE LETTERS

Featuring a stellar cast of Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley and Timothy Spall, “Wicked Little Letters” is a British black comedy mystery film telling the true story of a foul-mouthed scribbler in 1920s Sussex. Numerous crudely insulting anonymous letters, full of profanities, are sent to the residents of an English seaside town, and foul-mouthed rowdy Irish migrant Rose is charged with the crime. However, when the town’s women investigate, they suspect that something is amiss… Please be aware – this film is VERY swear-y (but that’s the whole point) – it’s also very funny.

MONSTER

‘Monster’ is a breath-taking piece of Japanese cinema by Hirokazu Koreeda (Shoplifters, Broker) telling the story of a mother who thinks something is wrong with her young son. She storms into school demanding answers, but the teacher suggests he is bullying another boy. As the story unfolds through the eyes of the mother, teacher and both children, shocking truths begin to emerge, showing the story from different viewpoints – the teacher, the principal and the two children. Who is the monster here? A tale of family, false impressions, and, ultimately, hope. Japanese with English subtitles.

On a rainy night in Busan, So-Young leaves her baby outside a ‘baby box’, a safe place set up in Korean churches for new mothers to leave unwanted infants. Instead, he’s picked up by Sang-Hyun, who runs an unofficial ‘adoption brokerage’ and plans to find him a new home. So-Young tracks down both Sang-Hyun and his business partner, and decides to join their pursuit – unaware they’re being tailed by two detectives who are determined to stop them. A hard-hitting political drama directed by Ken Loach, starring Dave Turner and Ebia Mari. Saturday February 17th – “THE GREAT ESCAPER” (12A)
The last film of Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson.
